Actually there are seven different classic moles in the state of Oaxaca -  including colors such as black, brown, brick red, yellow and green.

Legend says that mole sauce was created in the state of Puebla by a nun for a visiting Archbishop, but similar sauces were used for centuries by the indignant peoples in the area.

Some of the possible ingredients include chiles, tomatoes, sesame seeds, allspice, cloves, cinnamon, and a bit of chocolate for red mole; and guajillo chiles, yerba santa leaves, and masa harina for mole amarillo (yellow mole); pumpkin seeds, epazote, yerba santa, parsley, tomatillos, and green chiles for mole verde (green mole); charred dried chiles and avocado leaves for mole chichilo, guajillo and chipotle chiles, sesame seeds, and raisins for mole coloradito ("little red" mole, reddish-orange in color); and tomatoes, onion, puréed banana, vanilla, cinnamon, and ancho for manchamantel ("tablecloth stainer" mole);  nuts, chiles, assorted herbs and spices, puréed banana, and cinnamon-flavored chocolate (black mole).

both are considered moles,or Mexican curries if you prefer, since they are both fried paste prepared with chiles, peanuts, cocoa and other spices . making them from scratch is very labor intensive but you can actually buy it already made in a bottle or "glass", doña maria and tololoapan being the most popular. The only diference between red and green mole is the peppers used, hense the color.
