Portulaca Grandiflora, or moss rose, is a sun loving groundcover plant that looks a little like iceplant. The leaves are succulent and the tiny, rose-like flowers are generally an inch or less in size, and range from white to yellow, orange and fuschia, red and purple. Heirloom plants have flowers that open and close according to the light, but newer cultivars generally stay open much longer in the day. Moss rose is an annual.

Moss roses love hot and dry, coarse, sandy soil and are drought tolerant. They look great in containers and rock gardens.

From Brent Dickerson: "These roses, originally a sport of the Centifolia, bear on their flower-stems and sepals a mutation of the glands making it appear as if a green or reddish-brown moss were growing there, adding a unique delicacy to the buds. In this group can be found some deep crimsons, lacking among the regular Centifolias; this is possibly due to some hybridization involving crimson China roses."

A Moss rose is a Centifolia that sported many years ago to the same type but one with a green or brown "moss like" sticky growth around the sepals and flower stalks. They bloom in midsummer and have a lovely sweet fragrance.

These were popular in Victorian and  Edwardian times and were sports (mutations) from the centifolias. They resemble them in every way except that their flower stems are covered with green, sometimes brown, glands which at a distance  have some resemblance to moss.
