  1. A motel is a motorway hotel

  2. There are several types of motels. You can have motels in cities but the ones that seem scary are the ones way out in the middle of nowhere, perfect for people driving cross country.

A true motel is single story, so that you can drive your vehicle right up in front of the door and unpack your things, but some will also be multi story, usually with access from outside staircases, rather than internal. The funky thing about old-style motels is that they often have/had a sheltered drive through outside the lobby, basically so that you can drive right up and not need to walk more than two feet from  the vehicle. You will almost never have a breakfast area but might get donuts and coffee in the lobby. Motels and hotels have become more merged now so that certain chains in the States like Super 8 and Motel 6 are almost as nice as Holiday Inns and Comfort Hotels, but originally it is what most people are saying - a hotel on a motorway, but specifically designed with drive-thru access and easy parking in mind. They can be creepy when they are isolated and it is just you, the tv, some cinder block walls and the owner - but they can be culturally very cool places to stay.

In the States, a hotel is more likely to have a proper lobby and eating area, a general car park rather than being able to pull up in front of your own room, etc.

We also have hostels in America so it is not like a hostel. It is a private room with bathroom and tv.

  3. Motels are cheap... the closest America comes to hostels.  They are usually only one story and access to the rooms is from outside, rather than with hotels where there are indoor hallways and multiple floors.  They are usually very simplistic -- no wall art or throw pillows.  They are meant for short stays, usually not exceeding a few nights.  They are designed for travelers that need to take a break on the way to their destination, and are usually located immediately off of a highway exit for convenient access.

In movies the typical scenario is a character or several characters are stuck in the sticks where the motel is the only place for miles and miles.  And don't forget the creepy guy at the counter, the mysterious holes in the wall, and the fact that you and the tenant are isolated from the world!  Creepy!!!

  4. an american version of a hotel i think

  5. A hotel is like a big house tye of thing and a motel is like at a roadside and it's like in Psycho.

  6. It's a contraction of Motor and Hotel (Motel). They are one or two floors high and you park your car directly in front of your room. There are no internal hallways.

  7. Motel => Half Hotel + Half guest house+Main entrance is linked with a way or a road.

  8. in the older days when you were traveling on the road you could stop and rest

  9. ITs basicall a Hotel on a Motorway. Motorway Hotel...Motel.

  10. Generally they are like hotels / bed & breakfast, they probably wont have ensuite toilets and room service every day.  They are probably in horror movies because they are generalised as being run down bleak places and a big bright Hilton Hotel wont do it.

  11. An hotel is one building, whereas a motel has seperate buildings not fixed to the main building.....

  12. motels are usually a lower end version of a hotel, think less amenities cheaper rates

after World War II, the word motel, an abbreviation of motor and hotel or motorists' hotel, referred initially to a type of hotel in Columbia, MD of a single building of connected rooms whose doors faced a parking lot

As the highway expanded and route 66 grew people needed cheap places to sleep and motels were born

They usually put them in movies b/c they are lower end.

also they used to have a simper registration process not requiring credit cards or id which made them an ideal spot for those running from the law.

  13. Motel is a hotel but you drive to it

  14. i live in london and there are loads of motels. its like a hotel but you cant stay for longer than a week i think or even shorter. its mainly for weekend stays rather than a 2 week holiday. e.g business trips.

    xhope i helpedx

  15. It's a hotel that you can drive up to.  Usually, you can drive right up to the door of your room, or very close to it.  The word "motel" is a contraction of the words "motor hotel."
