  1. A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and female horse, whilst the offspring of a male horse and female donkey is called a hinny. Like most hybrids, both mules and hinnies are usually sterile, due to the parent species having different numbers of chromosomes, but very rarely a female will be fertile (there are no known cases of male mules or hinnies being fertile).

I am not aware of the new research you mention, but if it is the case that mules are more intelligent than horses or donkeys, it is likely to be the result of 'hybrid vigour' - that is, a hybrid animal possessing the best qualities of both parent species, resulting in greater versatility, resistance to disease, etc. Horses and donkeys are both intelligent animals, so it is no surprise that a cross between them would also be intelligent.

  2. A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse, which is classified as a kind of F1 hybrid.

    Characteristics :

The mule possesses the sobriety, patience, endurance and sure-footedness of the donkey, and the vigour, strength and courage of the horse. Operators of working animals generally find mules preferable to horses: mules show less impatience under the pressure of heavy weights, and their skin, harder and less sensitive than that of horses, renders them more capable of resisting sun and rain. Their hooves are harder than horses', and they show a natural resistance to disease and insects.

  3. A mule is the cross between a mare and a jack. A Henny is the cross between a stallion and a jenny. In my opinion mules are smarter because they take a donkeys common sense and add it to the horses trainability (better ability to learn). Hybrid vigor has a lot to do with it. Most all of these are sterile although some (like "Blue Moon") can breed. This is due to a difference in the number of chromosomes.

  4. A mule is a cross between a horse and a donkey.  They cannot reproduce.  I do not think they are smarter than a horse.
