In simple lay terms, a mystery shopper is someone who goes into a business to evaluate it secretly.  You are given a checklist of things to rate, are asked to purchase something to check customer service or have dinner to check service of waiters/waitresses.  Then you turn in your evaluation either online or thru the mail, and you're sent a rebate check for what you spent and usually a small amount to cover "pay".  You will not make much off of this, as you do have to spend SOME money at each place you "mystery shop", but you do get that money back.

I hope this helps.  My mom and I have been secret shoppers for years.  We do make a little on each one, but only on the ones that are truly close to home.
