What is a narcissist?

My therapist calls my bf a narcissist...what exactly is this? She said something about how he always has to have everything go his way.

    NOUN:

    Excessive love or admiration of oneself. See Synonyms at conceit.

    A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem.

    Erotic pleasure derived from contemplation or admiration of one's own body or self, especially as a fixation on or a regression to an infantile stage of development.

    The attribute of the human psyche charactized by admiration of oneself but within normal limits.

    The term is derived from the Greek myth of Narcissus. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus.

    3. believes that he or she is "special" and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)

    5. has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favourable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations

    6. is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends

    7. lacks empathy and is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others

    8. is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her

    9. shows arrogant, haughty behaviours or attitudes

    Narcissism is a serious personality disorder that is very difficult to treat.

    You do not want a narcissist as a husband!!!

    What's worse is that they can also have symptoms from other personality disorders...these people can get very messy!

    I am divorcing a "Borderline Personality Disorder" now, after 16 years of h**l trying to keep it together for the kids sake...please look at the links below, especially the second one and don't make the mistake I did...I also knew about her disorder and blew it off.
