  1. I have a Nikon Coolpix and it works really good.

  2. My favorite inexpensive digital camera is the Canon A590 IS.

It's a good quality camera, with good features, and many manual exposure controls not available in similar cameras in it's class:

    Image Stabilization

    Face Recognition

    Movie Mode

    4x optical zoom

Available at Newegg.com for about $150. They currently have a deal where you get a free 8gb SD card with your purchase. (good until Aug 31).

  3. I 2nd the A-590IS. It takes good pictures and is easy to learn on.

It uses AA batteries so buy 4 rechargeables and a charger about $25 or so. Keep the extra pair of batteries in your pocket. It will be cheaper in the long run to use rechargeables.

  4. My camera has 5.1 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and some digital zoom, but it seems to impress everyone with the quality of the pictures it takes ... like magic.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD display. Would suggest that you find one that has an optical view finder because the LCD is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

This could be the best slim line! Two of the ladies selling cameras at Best Buy and Walmart own this camera. Saw it for $249 at Walmart.

FUJIFILM - FinePix 10.0-Megapixel Digital also $249 at Walmart. The Walmart camera man owned this camera.

This seems like lots of camera and best camera for the money.

Wide-angle shooting, a 12x optical zoom and picture stabilization mode combine in this camera for exceptional shooting performance, even at a distance. Plentiful scene modes, autofocus and automatic white balance controls make this camera a snap to operate. Life time Warranty (Parts & Labor)

Check Walmart and Best Buy for prices. The people at Best Buy can give you really great advise and good prices.

The first link below will provide lots of information on most of the old and new cameras available today.

The second link will help you learn to clean the camera and battery contacts on any camera you buy. Digital Cameras require lots of power. If the contacts are not really good it can cause lots of problems. This is really important.

  5. Hi there.  It all really depends on your budget... but heres some helpful starts..

Most point-and-shooters are about 200-300, so if that is your budget, there are some good options!  Look at:

    Canon A540

This one is a 6MP camera and has awesome manual settings that you can use.  You can change everything from aperature, ISO, exposure, EV balance, lighting, light metering, etc.  Plus, Canon optics are really good, so for your first trial at messing with photography besides just taking pictures of friends while you are out, this one is great.

If you can spare an additional 100 or so, try the Canon S3 IS.  This one has "Image Stabilization (IS)"  which means that at higher exposures, it will reduce the blurriness caused by any motion that you introduce into the picture while you are taking the shot.  This camera is fully manually controllable as well, of course.

If you have more money to spend, there are plenty of good dSLR's in the 500-700 range, but you also have to remember that lenses for dSLR's are expensive.  I highly recommend trying out a cheaper alternative before stepping it up to a true dSLR, because it is a huge investment.

    Hope this helps!

  6. Photography implies using a fully adjustable camera ... not a point and shoot.

You may want to find a good Nikon or Canon 35 mm SLR on craigslist for around $150 with a standard zoom lens.  Then you can learn how to control your f/stops and shutter speeds using the cameras metering system and use your eye to shoot amazing shots.

Look here for ideas on how to do many things with a 35 mm camera.
