What is a nice rugged compact battery that can be used for camper lighting and electricity inside a camper?

This is a pop up tent camper....

Motor Cycle battery would be best.It is 12volts and a 21watt bulb (d.c. type used in automobiles) would give a powerful light to light up and you can even read in this light

Alternatively, you can also use a flourescent tube which will be equally good.(car indoor tube type which will work on d.c.battery)

well, you may want to go with a deep cycle battery. they can handle that kind of job. now if you want a rugged battery, then you want to look for an Optima Yellow Top. they cost about twice as much, but live about twice as long and can handle 15 times the abuse. not only that, but they are sealed, non spill-able batteries that can be used in any position except upside down. if you have not already heard of them, i would recommend checking out a Vector Power Inverter. they are the best 12V DC to 110V AC in the market. there are only two ways to fry them, hook them up backwards(+ and - switched) or by running them on a 24V DC circuit. I would recommend hooking up at least two batteries in parallel and running a power inverter. the size you get will depend on what you plan on using. it is best to get an inverter at least one size up from what you plan on getting because you never know when you will want to run more.

A sealed deep cycle battery will work well for this.  They are designed to be almost completely discharged before being charged again, which will damage a standard battery.  You can get one at most auto parts or RV stores.  Hope this helps.
