Open office is a free alternative to microsoft office. It has all the same features. Do take note though, the default format for a file saved in open office, will only be usable with open office. Just make sure you save the files as general .doc files, and not default.

it is a good second.  if you dont have word and cant get it, then use open office.  its not as easy to navigate, but it works

Yes, you can type with open office. The easiest way to describe it is Microsoft Office clone(pls don't hurt me). Since it exists only since 2001 it is less mature, but I am sure it will catch up. I suggest you download it and see if it suites your needs.

Yes open office is nearly the same as Microsoft office.

But the problem with it, is its save extension.

Be careful while saving your work. Because, if you want to open it in some others computer and it has MS word. Your file might not work.

open office is a open source office suit that has programs just like microsoft office that can open just about any standard microsoft office document. It is an excellent software suit and i highly recommend it to anyone who does not use powerpoint professionally.
