What is a ouija board and how does it work?

I am not really into ouija boards or witchcraft or anything but I watch Charmed alot and I have always been curious about them and if they actually work or not? Can anyone give me valid information on them?

Ouija boards are boards with letters and numbers on them that are supposed to be controlled by spirits that make the letters/numbers "move" slightly to spell something out. However, the users almost always are the ones moving the letters/numbers, and they do it unconsciously. I've heard of one occasion where two people I know were using a ouija board at a haunted location and had to rush to the church to have an emergency exorcism. Because of this, I've always been afraid to use one, though you're probably safe to if you want to try. It makes for good fun at sleepovers and junk because the girls start screaming because they're so freaked out! >.<

an ouija board is a board that you can make from basically anything that is a flat surface. it has letters a-z on it and numbers 0 - 9. these boards are used to come into contact with spirits. you say a prayer for it to start and you use something the spirit could use to move, like a shot glass. you ask questions and it moves around the board to the letters/numbers that correspond your answer. but keep in mind these boards are extremely dangerous. never ask when you're going to die, never ask about god, or where the gold is buried. don't even burn the board. they are risky business and if you use them, try using a bit of humor but not too much that it would p**s off the spirit. questions like 'who am i going to marry?' 'what color is my dog?' 'what is my final grade?' etc, don't do anything serious. and they really do work if you use the correct prayers and know how to use them. and home made boards work much better. just google a picture of an ouija board and make one that corresponds to that one.

The ouija board is just a game that you can buy in most toy stores and department stores, an ordinary piece of wood or plastic or cardboard.  It is meant for two or more players so it will not work very well if you try to use it alone.  It has no supernatural powers.  The people using the ouija board make it work through ideomotor movement.  It plays on your mind and imagination and your susceptibilities and beliefs and fears.  It can be scary because the imagination is a powerful thing, and can make you believe just about anything.  Here are a couple of links that discuss ouija boards and how to use them.
