What is the purpose of the pacesetter in track and field running? How do they prevent strategies?

  1. A pacesetter is someone who doesn't actually compete in the race, but their function is to run at a certain specified time. Ex:  in 800m races, they will usually have a 400m speciallist to run the first 400-600m. It gives the other runners something to aim for.
