  1. You bet that a horse will finish in the top 3 or 4 places, depending on the size of the field. The bet accrues a fraction of the starting odds.

All bookies will accept such a bet.

  2. In UK you cannot bet place only except on the Tote place pool or on a betting exchange or unless there is special place betting, which is rare. There may be an exception insofar as Totesport has recently introduced some place betting but how that compares to win odds I do not know. Generally, if you wish to bet for a place you have to stake a win bet  also (obviously on the same horse). This is known as each way.Traditionally place odds are a fraction of the win odds but unless there is a very competitive market bookies do not like to take each way as they feel that 1/4 of the odds is too generous in a market where they may bet large prices bar 3 or 4. However they are mean if they will not offer 1/4 odds when the favourite's price is 4-1 or more, so hardly ever accept 1/5th..

  3. Place bets are bets on a horse finishing in the first two, three or four places (depending on the size of the race).

In a big race like the Grand National you will win your bet if your chosen horse finishes first, second, third or fourth. You obviously have more chance of winning but the odds are less (usually one-quarter or one-fifth of the odds on a win).

The Tote is the only 'bookie' to accept place bets on UK racing but your payout cannot be calculated beforehand as you get a 'dividend' share of all the money taken by all the other place bets. This often makes place bets seem poor value for money.

William Hill and other bookies accept place bets on US racing, but you won't be able to do a place bet on the Grand National with Hills.

An each-way bet, which combines a win bet with a place bet, is a good way of combining the excitement and odds of a win bet with the bigger chance of a payout from a place bet - especially when betting on outsiders with high odds.

  4. A "Place Only" bet is one in which you are Picking a horse to come in second place. Visit a racetrack, a sportsbook or an OTB parlor. There is a Win (1st), Place (2nd) and Show (3rd).

If the horse comes in 1st, you still win on a place bet.

  5. If you want to bet place only, which is backing a horse to finish in the places (1-2-3 normally), then you would be better to open an account with a betting exchange like Betfair.com.

  6. Instead of doing a horse ew just get a place slip. Hills,Corals and ladbrooks have them just ask at the counter. Don't know about indies. Be lucky!
