  1. I think you're confusing terms.  A postdoctoral is a research position for someone who has recently completed doctoral studies.  This position usually lasts for 1-6 years.

    A doctorate degree is a research degree (Ph.D.), the highest acedemic award a student may achieve.  Those who achieve this are interested in pursuing a career in scholarly research.

    There are also Professional Doctorates, such as M.D. (Physician), DVM (Veterinary Medicine), J.D. (Juris, or Law).  While not as academically high as the research doctorate, it is still one of the highest achievements a student may earn.  They are for those who want a specific profession, instead of a career in scholarly research.
