A poultice is a soft moist mass, warmed and mixed with medication, that is spread on fine cloth, wrapped in the cloth and placed over the skin to treat an aching, inflamed, or painful part of the body.

I remember having mustard poultices placed on my chest when I had a congested chest as a child. The mustard powder was mixed with flour. Warm water was added until a paste was obtained and the mass was spread on a thin cloth, then placed on my chest. It was removed when it started getting cold.
