  1. The trick to having potted plants is they need a good drainage system.  When you plant them here are some things that can help:

    1.  Always use a pot with a hole in the bottom for excess water to drain out.  You can get a saucer to let it sit on, but this prevents water from sitting inside the pot, which can do some serious damage to your plant's roots.

    2.  Before adding any soil cover the bottom layer inside the pot with rocks or something similar.  This creates an easy way for water to escape and doesn't let the dirt clog the drainage holes.

It's kinda hard to know what to suggest when I don't know what you are doing that is killing your plants, but this website has some ideas for a variety of situations (under/overwatering, poor lighting etc).  You should check it out: http://www.flowers.org.uk/plants/caretip...

  2. The Victorians were very partial to what came to be called the cast iron plant. This plant tolerates most offenses and still looks good so it earn the name Cast Iron as well as a few other nick names. It real names is Aspidistra elatior, but another was spittoon plant because it could survive barrooms, is a tough evergreen, perennial herb that does well in low light conditions. Variegated marking are very nice.

My favorite; Sansevieria trifasciata - Snake Plant. The upright fronds fit into a small footprint but are elegantly banded like some snakes are. The tough leaf fibers were use to make bow strings but earned the plant the evil name of 'Mother-in-law Tongue'. It will bloom once large enough.

Sansevieria trifasciata "Laurentii" is Goldband Sansevieria. It has a variegated band the length of the leaf plus the horizontal black markings.  Variegation can be gold or silver

If you want a graceful flowering plant then the Spathiphyllum or Peace Lily is ideal. If you forget to water it the leaves lay flat but perk right back up if it hasn't been more than a day. A plant that tells you it is thirsty with out also dying is a pleasant change.

Also consider Split-leaf Philodendron or a Marble Queen Pothos for low light conditions.

Hanging plants can be convenient if table space is limited. Try a Grape Ivy Cissus rhombifolia. It is neither a grape plant nor an ivy relative but the name suits it.
