  1. God help us.

  2. A pilot who is allowed to fly as he pleases as long as he adheres to certain rules and does not fly for compensation (payment).

  3. A pilot who is licensed, yet not necessarily licensed to fly commercially.

All commercial pilots are private pilots, but not all private pilots are commercial pilots.

In order to make money from flying, you first need to get a private pilot license.  This simply states that you know the basics of flying the type of aircraft that your learnt on and that you are allowed to fly in a limited capacity.

Some people stop their licensing after this point.  They want to fly, but they don't want to make a career out of it.  There are a lot of people, including a few celebrities, who do this.  Maybe they do it just for fun, maybe they want to commute from place to place, maybe they're a farmer and want to spray their fields from above.  There are many non-commercial reasons to fly.

However, some people go on to get a commercial license.  Now they have all the privileges of before, but they can fly to make money.

  4. A private pilot is a level of certification.  The basic levels of certification:

Student Pilot: Very restrictive, no passengers allowed without a flight instructor on board.

Private Pilot:  The main restriction is that you can't fly for compensation or hire.  This means you fly solely for fun, not for a job.

Commercial Pilot:  CAN fly for hire.  Includes any for hire flying jobs, including traffic watch, sightseeing tours, air charter, banner towing, etc.

Airline Transport Pilot:  Required for captains of airliners.  Many corporate employers require this grade of certificate as well.

There are other less common certificates, but those are the major ones.
