I'm surprised your instructor hasn't explained this to you!

An engineering student project, in general, is intended to give students the opportunity to practice working in a team, applying engineering analysis and design methods, demonstrating an understanding of 'good practice', and creative thinking.

You will be given a specific problem to analyze and solve.  It will require research, calculation, perhaps some modeling work on a computer, and synthesizing a design.  As a general rule, the scope of the problem is already carefully defined - you won't have to do any requirements analysis.  Nor will you likely actually build anything, although that varies depending on the project type.
