Never been through one but I see an article here about them being installed at JFK. They are not in the airports at Jamaica and the Ion Scanner is just a part of this intelligent device, the part that checks whatever is blown off of you.

Here is how it works:-

With this machine you are asked to step aside into a large box. After placing your feet on the appropriate place on the mat, inside the machine, the doors in front of you close, and a barely comprehensible voice recording warns you of what is to come. Ever been to the eye doctor? If so, then you remember the point at which the person asks you to look at the red light, with your chin resting on the machine, so that they can blow sharp air puffs in your eyes. Well, that is the sensation of the air puffing machine in the airports, only the air is not aimed at your eyes, but all over your body. And, caution to those who are easily startled. If your arms flail up from your sides, the TSA staff will make you do it a second time. The machine also takes a digital photo of the person in the box and guards it temporarily. Hopefully, after 15 seconds, the doors slide open, at which point you are free to continue through the rest of the security screening devices. An alarm will go off if something suspicious is sensed.

The (commonly used) name is the "Ion Scanner".

A similar technology is the "trace detector".

The device blows/draws air over your body and clothing to collect microscopic samples. It is basically used to detect trace evidence of explosives, drugs, and chemical weapons.

This trace evidence would be on your skin or clothing even if you were just NEAR the chemicals that they test for recently. If you were near someone while they fired a gun within the last few hours, it could detect the smell of the gun powder on you. Likewise, if you were in a room where drugs were being packaged, it could pick up that scent too, even if you didnt come in contact with the drugs and took several showers before going to the airport.

The device is basically a super sensitive electronic sniffer-dog.

The devices can even detect the smell of large amounts of money strapped to your body!
