  1. Wow! I haven't heard that term since the 40's/50's.

    It is a floor lamp with an "arm" that extends about 12" and the bulb and shade are at the end of the arm.  The bulb end of the arm was usually moveable so that light could be directed.

    Originally, they were used near card tables (where have they gone?) for lighting while playing paying cards. Bridge was very popular then, hence the name "bridge lamp".
