What is a "circular"..in terms of advertising or graphic design?

Is it just another word for a direct mail piece? or a monthly or weekly issue of a flyer or journal?

Yes - just another word for a bulletin or notice or printed advertisement addressed and the distributed to a large number of people.

I believe a circular can also be a one-time thing such as an advisement of a 'grand-opening' circular for a store that carries pictures of promotional items.
