  1. A coal field can also be like an oil field or a gas field. It's a geographic area where there is a lot of coal underground, whether it's been mined, never been mined, or is being mined. The term just indicates that there is (or has been) coal there in sufficient quantities to be mined. So it might just look like mountains, or fields or whatever, until mining activity starts.


  2. A lot of coal found in one place.

    Around VA, it looks like someone removed the top of a mountain (because they did) and dug up the coal.
