  1. Receptors that serve the special senses of vision, hearing and taste produce RECEPTOR POTENTIALS. The receptor potential spreads to the base of the receptor where synaptic vesicles are located and directly increases or decreases their exocytosis. Neurotransmitter liberated from synaptic vesicles, may either stimulate or inhibit production of nerve impulses in the first-order sensory neuron, which extends into the CNS.
