What is a "hillar mass" in relation to a kidney??

  1. The hillar reqion is the indent part of the kidney "bean" where the blood vessels and the ureters exit from the kidney.  Sounds like an ultrasound or a radiographic study (?)--they are seeing a mass at that locale but do not have enough information to define what the mass is or is made of.  That will take additional tests, possibly biopsies.


  2. Hilum is a depression where structures are attached, in the case of the kidney the ureter,veins and arteries.

    Mass can be benign or malignant.  Shows up on x-ray, might be palpable, diagnosed by biopsy.

    Hilar has one 'l'.

  3. Hi, I don't usually answer questions unless I am sure of the answer, but I am 80% sure it means a mass that is in or around the kidney, or that surround the area where blood vessels enter and leave the kidney. Re-post this question for Dr Frank, or see if he picks it up.

    Because I know there are hilar lymph nodes. Ok i'm going to leave this one for Dr Frank..
