What is a "hold" in baseball?

I believe it is when a pitcher enters the game in a save situation, keeps the lead, but hands it over to another pitcher.  If the pitcher loses the lead, that pitcher is given a blown save.

Are you talking about when someone says that a player is in the hold?  In that case, it's the entrance, or steps of the dugout.  That is where the next batter to be in the on deck circle, stands.

Yes and it is awarded to middle reliever (guys that pitch after the starting pitcher and before the closer)

A Hold is when a middle reliever enters the game in a save situation (that is less than a 3 run lead) and exits the game without surrendering the lead. It does not matter if you give up runs as long as you exit the game with the lead. Also, it does not matter if you record an out. You just need to enter and leave so theoretically, there is as many holds in a game as there are middle relievers on a team whereas there is only 1 win and 1 save in a game.

Actually, a hold is when a relief pitchers enters the game with a runner(s) on base. He gets credited with a hold if he does not allow the runner(s) to score.

(I.E.-If Carlos Marmol enters the game with the bases loaded and 2 outs, and strikes out the only hitter he faces, he gets 3 holds.)
