I saw someone saying there were a "lacto-ovo vegan".

Isn't that a vegetarian who doesn't eat honey, wear wool, silk or leather or expolit animals in other ways ?

I've never seen anyone describe themselves as lacto-ovo vegan before and it doesn't really make sense to me.

"lacto-ovo vegetarian" - i can understand that phrase, because some veggies skip dairy & eggs, some don't.

  1. I think perhaps they chose to make themselves up a term because of their clothing and other preferences. I've never heard it either, and I don't think anyone can attach vegan to their title if they do consume that stuff. I wouldn't think of calling myself any type of vegan. I am proud of the vegetarian title.

  2. They sound confused or misinformed. There's no such thing as a "lacto-ovo vegan", it's a complete contradiction. Perhaps they meant lacto-ovo vegetarian.

  3. A Lacto-Ova Vegetarian is someone who eats milk(lacto) and eggs(ovo). I don't thing someone can be considered a vegan if they eat eggs/dairy.

  4. Lacto-ovo vegetarian means they will include milk products and eggs in a vegetarian diet.

  5. Lacto ovo...*vegan*? There's no such thing.

It's like being a pregnant virgin. It's paradoxical.

Whoever claimed to be a lacto ovo vegan is either misinformed, a bit confused over definitions, or is writing 'vegan' as shorthand to 'vegetarian'. It's most likely to be a mistake that they have overlooked.

There are lacto ovo vegetarians though. LOL! :)

  6. It makes about as much sense as "pesco-vegetarian."

  7. "lacto-ovo vegan"????

    .........nothing less than obsession/

  8. It's a term that basically means "very confused".

There is a depressingly large number of people that think vegan is short for vegetarian.

  9. A lacto-ovo-vegan is someone who hasn't got a clue what vegan means.

  10. Honestly, I don't think we should be so harsh about labels and getting the lingo right. Traditionally, a vegan is someone who tries to keep all animal products of any kind out of their daily lives, while a vegetarian does use some animal products dietary or otherwise. Lots of labels are just artificial ways to try to pigeon hole someone. I actually don't like the term "vegetarian" because it makes so many people think that vegetarians only eat vegetables and then they don't understand what a rich and full diet actually available to vegetarians.

Better than hearing a list of labels like "I am...." and thinking you know them, is getting to know the person in all their complexity.

Best advice? If someone calls themselves a lacto-ovo vegan, just ask them about it.

  11. Theres no such thing as a lacto-ovo vegan as you probably already know. And like what was said earlier, that makes just as much sense as a pesco-vegetarian!
