  1. A mystery quilt is a quilt that you start not know what it will look like in the end.  You get the instructions a step at a time.  For example, the first set would include what fabric you need.  Most of the time, it specfies what "values" the fabric should have, i.e. 1 yard of light, 2 yards of medium and 1 yard of dark.  Pick fabrics you like together.  The next set of instructions would include the cutting instructions.  The next set would include a step in the sewing.  The instructions would keep coming until the quilt is complete.

A mystery project is fun and great for getting you "outside your box".

  2. The first two posters both have good answers.  I want to add that many quilting web site have mystery quilts, where they give you all of the fabric requirements at the beginning. Then each month for a year they post the instructions for making a new block or border.  If you join in the middle of the year, no problem; previous blocks still are posted.

  3. A friend of mine did a mystery quilt. Every month she would get a different block sent to her, nine or twelve in all. When she finished them she puts them all together. So at the start you don't know what it is.
