What is a "quid" in terms of currency?

In currency, what is a quid equal to? I hear this a lot on the Gordan Ramsey show, so I'm assuming its an English term. Just how much is a quid? Is it the same as a pound or a euro? Or is it a slang term?

    Also a fiver is a 5 pound note and a tenner is a ten pound note.

    £1 = 1 pound sterling = 1 quid

    £5 note = a 5 pound sterling note = fiver

    £10 note = a 10 pound sterling note = tenner
