  1. A driver, who due to their driving record or history that the insurance company knows about by the way, will pay more to carry coverage.


  2. It's a driver that's being charged on a policy.  It doesn't HAVE to be a driver with a surcharge - if you have one car, and multiple drivers, only ONE driver is the rated driver - usually the most expensive one.  The others are included, but don't get charged extra for.

  3. A rated driver is a person listed in the drivers section of your policy and is being taken into consideration by the company when determining your premium.  The age, length of driving experience and accident/conviction history of that person can affect your premium.  Some companies list all residents of a household who have a license in the drivers section but if some of those drivers have their own car and insurance and this has been proven to the insurance company, the drivers  will be unrated drivers, meaning that their age, length of driving experience and accidents/conviction history is not being included in the premium.
