  1. High school teacher is much much much easier. To be a college professor, you need to go to graduate school (an extra 3-4 years after undergrad), and in order to be hired, you need to have published books or articles and make a name for yourself in the math community.

  2. To become a math professor, you would  need to  get a bachelor's degree and a PhD in mathematics.   A bachelor's degree takes four years and a PhD takes 4-8 years, depending on how long it takes you to complete your dissertation.  You might be able to teach with only a masters, at a community college or a small school, but you'll likely have a lower salary and less job security than colleagues with PhD's.

Even with a PhD, the market is quite competitive.  Typically openings for new assistant professors get 1-4 HUNDRED applicants. You'll have a better chance if you do your graduate work at a top program (not just the best program in Texas).  After graduate school, many people are unable to find tenure track positions immediately, so they work in postdoc or visiting professor positions for 1-6 years after graduation.  It may be necessary to move to a new geographic location for each new position, so you may have to move several times to random locations.  Generally, if you want to find a tenure track position, you need to be very flexible about where you will live.  If you're unwilling to move to other regions of the country, you probably won't like the academic job search.

To be a high school math teacher, you need to get a bachelor's degree in mathematics education and pass the state certification requirements.

  3. You need at least a masters degree in math to teach at the college level  -- that's about 2 years of graduate school time in addition to your bachelor's program.  However, that's for mostly teaching at the community college level.  If you want to teach at the larger institituion level you will need a doctoral degree in math and this is not an easy task at all.  Finding work as a professor in math isn't easy either, even with a Ph.D.  You have to realize that unlike many other majors out there, math isn't very popular and doesn't attract many students (go figure!).  This means math departments don't really grow much so they only hire when someone quits or dies.  Community college math instructors are growing though, as a lot of student's come out of high school without even basic math skills so the CC's are expected to nurse them.

You can teach high school math with just a major in math, engineering, or a physical science and taking a teacher's certification course.

  4. St Marys University
