Propellerhead's Reason 4.0 is quite advanced and incredibly easy to use. Unlike GarageBand, Reason uses Sound Banks to create more realistic and life-like instruments, while still maintaining a level of usability far more organized than SONAR's Cakewalk application.

FL Studio is a great alternative to Reason, though it may cost more than you are looking to spend. Another downside to FL Studio is that it may only be run from a Windows-based operating system, losing all compatibility with Macintosh- and Linux-based computers.
