  1. A phenotype expressed only when there are no copies of dominant alleles for that gene in the genome of the organism.

    Example for a diploid organism: white petals are recessive to red petals.  If the organism has a copy of the red petal allele, the flowers will be red, regardless of what the second allele is (red or white).  If the organism has two copies of the white allele, the white phenotype will be expressed.
