Mildly offensive term for a lower class white person from the southeastern states of the USA. Derives from someone who spent a lot of time on manual labour outside and so received a "red neck" from the sun.

The term itself refers to a person whose neck gets badly sunburned, as in spending a day riding a tractor out in the sun. It is meant to mean a person who is from the country and the stereotype is that a such a person would not be very well educated or sophisticated and might hold certain beliefs that indicate a narrow mind.
