  1. Broadly, repatriation can be described as the return of a person, persons or their remains to the country from where they originated.

Repatriation can either be voluntary or forced, in case of living persons. For example, an expatriate living abroad might move to his or her own country with their family- on their own will. In other cases, somebody might be forced to return to their own country because they broke a law. In such forced cases, it can also be called 'deportation'.

Refugees living in another country can also be called repatriants as they will usually have to return either voluntarily or forcibly to the place from which they came. Their stay in the new country is temporary till the reason that caused them to flee their native land- such as war, famine, draughts, earthquake or other disasters- are removed, making way for them to return.

Repatriation can also be applied to a person or persons who died abroad due to any circumstances and their body or remains such as ashes or bones, were sent to their native land for last rites.

However, a person whose family originated in one country but acquired the citizenship of another, cannot be 'repatriated' to the country from which they came originally. That is because they had chosen to break roots with the country of their origin.

  2. In anthropology, repatriation usually refers to the return of Native American skeletal remains and grave goods.  They are repatriated to the tribe that can prove the closest historical affiliation, and they are usually reburied.

Repatriation is a controversial subject; there is a raging battle between scientific inquiry and Native American autonomy.  Both sides have valid arguments.

Repatriation became standard practice after the 1995 passage of the "Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)."

  3. repatriation of a national to the motherland that they were born in. Repatriation of remains when they are dead. For instance I am an immigrant to Canada - if I return to England to live - where I was born then I am repatriated to there. Right now I am an expatriate -

  4. Repatriation is the returning of certain goods to the peoples they were taken from.  The Native American Graves Repatiraton Act (Nagpra) states that all grave goods, bones, and sacred artifacts taken by muesums, governments agencies and universities must be returned to the tribes they were taken from or the the nearest relation of that tribe.

  5. Repatriation is the restoration to ones country. The variations comes with the context of the situation. We have financial repatriation and personal repatriation, as well as repatriation of skeletal remains, such as the one that occur occasionally even now from Vietnam. I will enclose a website for financial repatriation. An example of repatriation would be when Jimmy Carter allowed the individuals that fled to Canada to return to the U.S. with no penalty. it is true that an expatriate may live in a foreign country and be repatriated upon his return, but that is an example of it being contextual.
