What is a respectable brand for buying a set top box for my LCD TV?

Question

My Dad's birthday is coming up in early May and for his birthday I want to buy a Digital Set Top Box so we can watch TV in High Definition.

He just brought an LCD TV which supposibly had in built HD but it doesnt.

So what I want to buy is a half decent brand without going through the roof price wise. I would like it so we can watch it in HD and have hard disk recording as well so we can record shows while we are out without having VCR's or Disks.

So what are some good brands, prices and places to buy these from.
