The generator can be turned into a motor and the turbine used to pump water up into the reservoir where it is stored for generating power later a time of greater need.  A similar arrangement is used at a reservoir below Niagara Falls where water is pumped up using power generated by the Falls at night when commercial and industrial draw is low and the water is released in daytime when it is high.
