Roan , is a color of a horse a rare color, it also known as

Red Roan (strawberry roan, blood roan, red roan, ect)

with chestnut, red, white hairs  darker toward the head and down the legs can have lots of  white on the rump making it look like a appaloosa from a distence

or

Blue Roan, has white, gray and black hairs mixed mostly darker at the head and lighter at the main body getting darker going to the rump and down  the legs

A roan is any horse with white hairs evenly spread throughout their body.

A roan is different from a grey horse.  A roan will have the white hairs with their base color forever.  A grey horse will start out as a color, but gradually turn to grey over time.  Usually a grey will be a dark color at birth and gain more white hairs over time until they turn very white once they're an older horse.  Some horses will stay a darker grey, some will continue turning all the way until they look white.  Winning Colors, the filly who won the Kentucky Derby in 1988, was registered as a roan, but was actually a grey.

There are different colors of roan.

* bay roan- Black points with a brown body just like a bay except they have LOTES white hair mixed in with the brown. But the points are still predominantly black.

*yellow roan is a palomino

* red roan is a sorrel with lotes of white hairs mixed in their coat.

*Chestnut roan has darker points but not black

*Grulla is not a roan it has mouse colored hair all  over but no white hairs mixed in on the body. And they have black points.
