  1. It simply means the top level of a disk or volume. All of the files within folders are NOT in the root of the drive.


  2. A root directory is usually the base folder of the program in question. Say you have installed a program on you windows computer and you need to access the root directory. You would open My Computer then go into the Hard Drive and open the folder called Program Files, after that you would just look for the folder with the company name of the program or the name of the program and open that folder and there is the root directory.
