  1. 1. when they replace the tooth's root with a metal rod because the root has decayed too much to hold the tooth in place

    2. Quite a bit

    3. Without novocaine it's excruciating

  2. I think you're referring to a ROOT filling. Here you go:

    Root filling

    What is a root filling?

A root filling is a filling placed inside the root canal of the tooth. A root filling may be necessary if the nerve inside the tooth dies. This may be caused by dental injury or tooth decay penetrating the nerve. An abscess may develop.

    What happens?

        * your dentist may take an X-ray to decide whether the tooth can be saved – a number of visits may be required

        * local anaesthetic may be used to numb the tooth

        * the inside of the root is filed to clean out the root canal and may be dressed with antiseptic

        * another X-ray may be taken to measure the root’s length

        * if the infection is removed, your dentist may fill the root canal at this appointment or at a subsequent visit

        * a large filling or crown may be required at a later date

        * root-treated teeth are more brittle than normal, and may also discolour over time

    What should I do?

        * attend your dentist regularly – the filled tooth requires careful monitoring

        * brush and floss thoroughly

I've had normal fillings and it will depend how deep the filling is. If it does not go down to the enamel then it won't hurt much at all, once it touches the enamel it will gradually get more and more painful, the deeper it goes into it. However you get easily get injections to numb your mouth so you do not get any pain throughout the procedure. Considering your Mum's getting a root filling she'll get an injection so she won't have to worry about pain. YES the injection pricks a bit but it's over very quickly and its much better than being through excruciating pain throughout the proceedure

  3. Maybe you mean "routine filling", like it's no biggie, and just a run of the mill, normal cavity drill and fill.

h**l yes it hurts, even more when you get the bill. :D

They give you a topical to numb you, then shots with needles and some "caine", and then gag your mouth wide open, and drill and fill for about an hour.

My teeth hurt worse for weeks, AFTER going to the dentist to get drilled and filled. :( OUCH!
