  1. Short answer is that it carries video signal.

    Longer answer is that s-video is a cable standard to carry an analog video signal with separate chrominance (color) and luminance (intensity) lines.  It is generally considered "better" than composite (standard "RCA video") but not as good as component video.  All of these are analog standards and should not be confused with digital standards such as HDMI and DVI.

    In general order of best to worst:

    HDMI/DVI

    Component (RGB or YPbPr)

    S-Video

    Composite ("yellow RCA")

    it has slightly better quality than a standard RCA cable

    but not as good as component or HDMI

    basically it does the same thing as a regular video cable tho (yellow)

    which is transmit the video signal from your dvd player cable box ect to your tv
