Im interested In getting a scooter, but Im unclear as too whatr a scooter cbt is, how much to pay for a 50cc scooter. Where to get oned from (new or second hand), or how much insurance would cost. Is it reasonable to expect to get all of this for under £500?

Cheers

  1. £500 will probably not be enough you need to budget for helmet, gloves and jacket, lock as well as insurance. Second-hand scooters can be had but there is a risk involved based on their past life, for peace of mind either buy from someone you know and trust or from a dealer.

The CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) is a short course that gives you the basics of how to ride followed by an observed ride on the road – it is not a test, the instructors want you to pass, as noted before it is changing in October to include more instruction.

  3. Tom,

I think you mean cvt, which stands for continuously variable transmission.  All "automatic" scooters have this transmission.  It means you don't have to shift.

There are huge differences in quality between scooters.  Some of the top quality scooters are made in Taiwan, Italy, and Japan.

    Look for these manufactures:

SYM, KYMCO, Piaggio, Vespa, Aprilia, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, CFMoto, Q-link

I would only buy CFMoto and Q-link new, since their quality has only gotten better in recent years.

Beware cheap Chinese scooters!  These scooters can fall apart in less than a week, have no dealer network, or parts availability.  In the States, insurance on a 49cc scooter is $80/year, and you can get a 4-5 year old name brand scooter for around $1000.

    Good luck!
