  1. A second cousin is the grandchild of your great-aunts or great-uncles. It is also your mother's/father's first cousin.


  2. Your parent's brothers and sisters are your aunts and uncles.  Your aunts and uncles kids are your 1st cousins.  Your 1st cousins kids are your 1st Cousins Once Removed.  Your 1st cousin's grandkids are your 1st Cousins Twice Removed, etc., etc.

    Your 1st cousins kids and your kids are 2nd cousins.  Your 1st cousins grandkids and your kids are 2nd Cousins Once Removed, etc.

    Your grandkids and your cousins grandkids are 3rd cousins, and so on and so forth.

    This is the system commonly used in the U.S., but I think it might be different in the U.K. or other Commonwealth countries.

  3. Your parents cousin is your second cousin.

    The same term is used for their children.

  4. Your second cousin would be the person who shares a set of great-grandparents with you.

    Sharing a set of grandparents is your first cousin.

    Sharing a set of great-grandparents is your second cousin.

    Some people will tell you that a second cousin is the child of your first cousin.  That is incorrect.  The child of your first cousin is your first cousin once removed.

    It is very confusing, I know.
