  1. Using the example the first respondent gave, if you view a market as an orange, a segment would be a specific, well-defined group within that market.

    For example, take the category of Jewelry Buyers. One segment might be purchasers of white gold. Another segment might be purchasers of gemstones. Another segment might be bridal or engagement ring buyers.

    Segmenting is the practice of defining markets by demographic information (age, gender, income, education, marital status) or by psychographic information (media habits, buying habits, lifestyle habits, etc.).
