  1. it is your own private sewage station. That is normally located on your property. It is a tank in your back yard that stores and sort of treats all your waste. No very efficient but works.

Needs to be cleaned every so often. Hope this helps

  2. A septic tank, the key component of a septic system, is a small scale sewage treatment system common in areas with no connection to main sewerage pipes provided by private corporations or local governments. (Other components, typically mandated and/or restricted by local governments, optionally include pumps, alarms, sand filters, and clarified liquid effluent disposal means such as a septic drain field, ponds, or peat moss beds.) Septic systems are a type of On-Site Sewage Facility (OSSF). In North America approximately 25% of the population relies on septic tanks; this can include suburbs and small towns as well as rural areas. In Europe they are generally limited to rural areas only.

The term "septic" refers to the anaerobic bacterial environment that develops in the tank and which decomposes or mineralizes the waste discharged into the tank. Adding a supplemental bacterial agent to the tank may accelerate the digestion of solids in the tank. Septic tanks can be coupled with other on-site wastewater treatment units such as biofilters or aerobic systems involving artificial forced aeration.[1]

Periodic preventive maintenance is required to remove the irreducible solids which settle and gradually fill the tank, reducing its efficiency. In most jurisdictions this maintenance is required by law, yet often not enforced. Those who ignore the requirement will eventually be faced with extremely costly repairs when solids escape the tank and destroy the clarified liquid effluent disposal means. A properly cared-for system, on the other hand, can last for decades and possibly a lifetime.

  3. Its where all the stuff from your toilet is stored

  4. They are used for wastewater disposal in homes that are not connected to public water treatment systems. They are large underground tanks that hold/filter the waste water while the waste is "digested" by live enzymes in the tanks. The water is slowly cleaned through filtration and released onto nearby ground onto a "drain field". They need to be pumped out by a service once a year to once every several years, and should not be built over or driven on by heavy vehicles/equipment as most are made of concrete and can crack (NOT GOOD) lol

  5. A septic tank is a giant tank where all the sewage from a house connected to it goes. A septic tank is an alternative to a sewer, which takes all the sewage away from the house. With a septic tank, all the sewage stays on the property, underground. They can get backed up and can cost hundreds to fix or replace.
