  1. Shrapnel?

Shrapnel is the term originally applied to an anti-personnel artillery shell which carried a large number of individual bullets to the target and then ejected them forwards, relying almost entirely on the shell's velocity for their lethality. Today the term is commonly incorrectly used to describe the metal fragments and debris thrown out by any exploding object, be it a high explosive (HE) filled shell or a homemade bomb wrapped with nails or steel balls.

  2. jagged pieces of metal, which can cut human skin.

  3. i think you mean shrapnel

An artillery shell filled with lead balls and a small bursting charge in the base that propelled the balls forward, acting like a shotgun cartridge. It was usually time-fused to burst 10-20 feet in the air (although a percussion fuse could be used) and was most effective against personnel and horses in the open. It was the main shell used by the Royal Artillery before the war, and remained so for field guns.

It is a fragment from an exploded artillery shell, mine or bomb. It is not for military medical purposes, a projectile such as gravel or splinters caused by an explosion which may or may not wound or kill. This exception though seldom used today, once excluded the issuance of a Purple Heart Medal. (In Vietnam for example, the Marine Corps sent its troops home to the States after three Purple Hearts, and this exclusion was used to return them to the lines without a third award.)

Shrapnel is little bits of metal from a hand grenade or some other explosive metal object. It would be dangerous because it will tear up your body.

  4. do you mean shrapnel?   If so it's the debris propelled in an explosion.

  5. If this is a history question, it is a bomb which was used in WW1. I cant find a picture so I'll give you a bit of info...

On a history trip to the Belguim trenches, we visited a huge whole in ground and this is the story behind it...

One of the armys (cant remember which one, sorry) threw thousands of bombs into it, some worked but because so many were made so quickly many failed, but this dip in the ground is HUGE! if you fell in you would need to call for help! But yeah, some that failed are still underground and my teacher told us not to get too close to the hole in the ground because there is still a chance of some exploding!

It was filled with metal and can cause a big explosion.

Hope I explained it well and answered your question.

The functioning and principles behind Shrapnel shells proper were totally different to high-explosive shell fragmentation
