A Schengen visa allows you to travel throughout the Schengen zone without having to get visas for every member country.  You must, however, apply for the visa at the embassy of the country you intend to either land in first or visit exclusively.  A single entry visa allows you to enter the Zone only once; a multiple entry visa allows you to return to the Zone more than once, as long as you abide by the length-of-stay rules.
