Hi, I am hoping to soon own a snake for the first time! I know the basics of caring for them, but now I need to work out which breed to get!

I am thinking of a Children's python, but am un-sure.

I would like a snake no bigger than 6ft (prefer 5ft or smaller) and isn't venomous at all.

I would also like one that doesn't mind being handled.

PLEASE MAKE SURE IT IS AVAILABLE AND ALLOWED IN AUSTRALIA!

So which should I get?

Thanks!

  1. Ok, I have a new snake that I think definately suits a beginner. A ball python can make a great pet. They will usually max out to 5 ft, and look stalky. You also want to it them aspen bedding, a water dish large enough to soak in. Give it a nice, big hiding spot, but not too big. They will need room. Get a warm side and a cool side. The water dish should go on the cool side. Their average life span is 20-30 years. During the day, the temperature should be 80-90 degrees. By night it should decrease to 70-80 degrees. The humidity level should be 60-70%. Give the snake some branches because they love to climb at night. I suggest getting an undertank heater as well. Ball pythons are great beginner snakes. You should feed the snake a good size rodent weekly. At maturity, a rat will do nicely for a longer period of time. A 40"x32"x24" is a good size cage. Ball pythons require about 14 hrs of light during summer and 10 hrs during winter.

I hope this helps. Write more details if you're interested. :)
