So, ive always thought snakes were very interesting, and i have been thinking about getting one for some time now, but i can't decide on one species. I'm looking for a small snake that stays under 2.5 feet, preferably and is good for a first time snake owner. if you have any suggestions, please feel free to answer! and thanks!

  1. I would recommend a sand boa or rosy boa. They stay small and are pretty easy to take care of and come in different color morphs. Here's a care sheet that might be helpful. http://www.anapsid.org/rosyboa.html. Sand boas are cool also because they spend most of their time underneath the sand, so to get them out (both species are very docile and calm) you have to rake with your fingers through the sand. These snakes are also affordable, and I would recommend checking out the Kingsnake.com classifieds. The other options would be some species of milksnakes or kingsnakes that get 2-4 feet, but they are slightly more fragile and a good deal more expensive.

  2. A grass snake or garter snake is small.  What you feed it will depend on what kind of snake it is.  If it is a water snake, such as a Florida Garter Snake, it will only eat slippery foods, such as fish, tadpoles, frogs, and earthworms.  It will shun crickets.

If it is a land snake, it will eat crickets and mealworms.

They live a long time (ours is 9 years old, now), so be prepared for that.

  3. Garters are fairly harmless.. and rather small.

You could get a small python, its really fun to watch them eat.

  4. red rat/yellow corn  snakes make nice pets but they get long. not sure but think they wont out grow cage.
