a smelter is used to remove metal form ore. the ore is placed in a crucible and heated until the ore melts. the molten ore forms layers that can be separated leaving just the metal. most of the rock in the ore forms slag, a glass like material that is skimmed of of the top of the molten metal. they are still used today. it is the only practical way to separate most metals form the ore.
