What is a social climate?

i am reading a book and i have to answer questions about it. one of the questions askes "how does the setting (time period, location, and social climate) influence the events in the story?" i would like a description of what a social climate is.

  1. In sociology and politics, the term "climate" is used in reference to a concept of aggregate mood within a society, by analogy to weather and temperature :

      A social climate is what the society's overall feelings were in regard to what is happening at that time. ( That's what I got from the definition of it.)
