  1. Basically, it means telling an abstract story some other guy they call "sociologist" came up with some time in the past and actually believed to be true, which is why he called his story an "explanation".

If you want to be "successful", what u do is:

    1) find out which "sociologists" ur boss likes.

    2) find out which story these sociologists liked to tell.

    3) pick the one you like most.

    In the article,

    4) describe what you observed - what you saw, heard and what people told you.

    5) write "and sociologist "so and so" (insert name) believed this was because ... (insert theory)".

If you want to score more points with your boss,

    6) write "according to sociologist ´"so and so" (insert name), this is because ... (insert theory)".

    7) Check your feelings.

If you don´t care about success, what you do is

    1) just write what YOU think.

Cuz it might be true. Or not.

    Cheers.

  2. BASICALLY tell how the event effects soceity

  3. explain why something happened in broad terms:  ex.

there was a shooting in Los Angelos is your story - you explain this sociologically by discussing poverty as a root of crime or something

in other words, think about something in a broader context of society.  sociological explanations show why one news incident is part of a bigger whole.  it isn't about one crazed gunman, it's about a pattern of violence.
